They frequently use a wide range of hand and power tools and must keep their tools in safe, working condition.
Working Conditions
Millwrights may work alongside other construction trades and are employed both indoors and outdoors, often in confined spaces. The job requires significant physical activity, including climbing, lifting, carrying, reaching, balancing, kneeling, crawling, and twisting.
Aptitude and Interest
Successful millwrights have a strong understanding of mechanical systems, including drive shafts, bearings, gears, conveyors, and turbines (gas, nuclear, and steam). Their work often requires combining skills from multiple trades to assemble or repair machinery with extreme precision—sometimes within thousandths of an inch. Strong problem-solving skills are essential for diagnosing and maintaining equipment.
