MIS Manager

Management Information Systems (MIS) Manager
Nature of Work

The Management Information Systems (MIS) Manager is responsible for overseeing the effective use of computer technology within a construction organization. This role involves planning for the acquisition and use of hardware and software to support both short- and long-term business goals.

The MIS Manager provides leadership and direction for all technology-related functions, including budgeting, staffing, and training. They ensure that employees are properly trained to use systems and that technology supports overall company operations. Another key responsibility is maintaining security for all computer systems, software, and data.

Additional duties include selecting, maintaining, and managing computer equipment and software. In smaller companies, this role may not exist as a formal position, and leadership in technology use may come from individuals in other departments who have strong computer skills and an understanding of company operations.

Education and Training

Most MIS Managers hold a college degree in information systems, computer science, or a related field. However, it is possible to advance into this role through experience and demonstrated ability with technology. Ongoing computer training is essential at all levels to effectively use and manage systems.

Advancement Potential

MIS Managers may advance to senior leadership roles, such as Vice President of Information Systems. As construction companies increasingly rely on technology, information systems play a critical role in long-term planning and business strategy.

Other Computer-Related Positions

Construction companies also employ a variety of technology-focused roles, including:

  • Computer Operator

  • Computer Programmer

  • Systems Analyst

  • CAD Operator

  • Hardware Support Technician

A background in construction is often beneficial for these positions, as it helps align technology solutions with industry needs.
